Samburu National Reserve

Samburu National Reserve. The secluded and rugged Samburu National Reserve is tucked away in northern Kenya, featuring landscapes that differ significantly from the grasslands found in the Masai Mara. Here, towering mountain escarpments rise above semi-arid plains, while the Ewaso Ng’iro river winds its way through the center of the reserve.

A key attraction of this area is the Samburu Special Five – a group of distinct animals that are native to northern Kenya. This group includes Somali ostrich, Grevy’s zebra, and reticulated giraffe, along with a peculiar antelope known as the ‘gerenuk’, which stands on its hind legs to reach shoots from tall tree branches.

There are numerous safari activities to partake in, with game drives being the most sought-after option. In the nearby conservancies, you can also experience bush walks and night drives, along with lavish bush breakfasts along the riverbank. The animals and local Samburu herders traverse the dry riverbed like a highway in their quest for water, making it an excellent location for wildlife observation.

The ideal accommodation is Saruni Samburu, located in the adjacent Kalama Conservancy or Ashnil Samburu. The views from the exclusive luxury suites and infinity pools extend widely across the reserve, and the warrior guides possess an impressive understanding of their local area. For a unique experience, you can try scorpion hunting at night, or make your way to the concealed hide for a chance to observe elephants quenching their thirst at the waterhole.
