Solio Game Reserve. The Solio Game Reserve is a private sanctuary focused on the conservation of rhinos. Located in the valley between the towering slopes of Mount Kenya and the summits of the Aberdare Mountains, the reserve is situated just north of Nairobi and supports a population of around 200 rhinos. Visiting the game reserve offers thrilling game drives during the daytime, and the experience is enhanced with an overnight stay at the luxurious Solio Lodge.
The Solio Game Reserve, formerly known as Solio Ranch, was initially an operational cattle ranch, but in 1973, a portion was designated as a wildlife sanctuary. As a result, rhinos and various other wildlife began to return to the region. Today, it spans 49,000 acres, including 19,000 acres dedicated to a sanctuary for both black and white rhinos. The rhinos coexist peacefully with other species, such as buffalo, zebras, giraffes, elands, antelopes, waterbucks, and warthogs.
Rhino sanctuary
Did you know that there is no color distinction between black and white rhinos? The name is thought to originate from a mistranslation of the Afrikaans word ‘weit’, which means wide and refers to the white rhinos’ square-shaped lips used for grazing. Black rhinos have hooked lips, which is the primary difference between the two species.
In addition, black rhinos are smaller than white rhinos. They tend to favor thick bush environments, while white rhinos typically inhabit open grasslands. Black rhinos are also more solitary, timid, and aggressive compared to white rhinos, which is why white rhinos are often easier to spot and approach.
How to get there
Traveling by road, it takes roughly three hours to reach the Solio Game Reserve, situated 111 miles away from Nairobi. Alternatively, you can opt for a 45-minute flight from Nairobi to the private Solio airstrip, which is just 10 minutes from Solio Lodge. Another option is to fly domestically from Nairobi to the Nanyuki airstrip, followed by a 30-minute transfer to Solio Lodge.
Best time to visit
The optimal period to explore the Solio Game Reserve is from January to March, while the peak tourist season runs from July to October, attracting numerous visitors to Kenya. Planning your trip just after December is ideal, as the short rains enhance the vegetation and draw in a wealth of wildlife.
