Tarangire National Park is renowned for its impressive Baobab trees, which can reach enormous sizes and possess a distinctive shape. The park is also well-known for hosting the largest population of elephants globally. Visitors can witness herds of up to 300 elephants congregating around the Tarangire River. This river serves as the main source of fresh water for the wildlife. During the dry season, the animals gather here to drink or simply to take a bath and cool off from the intense heat. Toward the end of the dry season, elephants will excavate the riverbed to access underground water or search for Baobab trees to quench their thirst.
In addition to elephants, Tarangire is a haven for bird enthusiasts. You can find a variety of species, including parrots, hornbills, lovebirds, and lilac-breasted rollers, as well as Kori bustards, eagles, and vultures. The swamps in Tarangire National Park host one of the largest populations of breeding bird species globally. Additionally, the areas surrounding these swamps are home to lions, leopards, cheetahs, and even pythons that climb trees.
