Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park is situated in Kenya, near the Tanzanian border. The park covers an area of 151 square miles (392 sq km). It is a part of a larger ecosystem that spans 3,100 square miles (8,000 sq km) across Kenya and Tanzania.

Dominating this protected area is Mount Kilimanjaro, known as the rooftop of Africa. Previously, Amboseli National Park was known as the Masai Amboseli Game Reserve. It can be found in Kajiado County in southern Kenya. This national park conserves two swamps and the plains at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Amboseli features five distinct wildlife habitats, including open plains, woodlands of yellow-barked acacia, lava-strewn rocky thornbush, swamps, and marshlands. The Oldoinyo Orok massif rises majestically to an elevation of 8,300 feet (2,760 m).

The combination of these habitats creates a diverse array of scenic landscapes, all framed by views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Amboseli National Park is also characterized by a vast expanse of sky that stretches from one horizon to another. The nights here offer incredible stargazing opportunities.

Amboseli National Park is a premier safari destination, offering a diverse and plentiful array of wildlife to experience. Most visitors to Amboseli are eager to partake in safari adventures and wildlife experiences. A standout feature is the opportunity to see animals set against the stunning backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The extended dry season provides excellent chances to witness animals frequenting the swamps and various watering holes. In addition to the large elephant herds, wildlife lovers can anticipate seeing lions, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, mongooses, giraffes, cape buffalo, warthogs, baboons, monkeys, zebras, impalas, and various gazelle species, among others. The main area for wildlife observation is located in the park’s eastern section.

During a morning game drive in this eastern region, safari-goers might spot lions, leopards, cheetahs, black rhinos, elephants, buffalo, and giraffes all in one outing. Besides these sought-after animals, there may also be sightings of elands, waterbucks, and zebras. Amboseli is an exceptional location for immersing oneself in the wilderness of Africa.

Bird enthusiasts will discover a haven featuring over 400 bird species. Among these, 47 species of raptors highlight the avian diversity in Amboseli National Park. While various bird species can be found throughout the area, the best opportunities for birdwatching often occur in the lake, marsh, and swamp regions.
