The Ngorongoro Conservation Area stretches from Serengeti National Park in the north to the Great Rift Valley in the east. Covering over 8,000 km² (3,200 sq. miles), the conservation area includes the Ngorongoro Crater, Ndutu, Olduvai Gorge, Empakaai, Olmoti Crater, and Oldonyo Lengai Mountain. This diverse landscape of forests, valleys, savannas, craters, lakes, and swamps hosts a wide variety of wildlife.
Ngorongoro Crater
The renowned Ngorongoro Crater is the primary characteristic of this region. A large volcano erupted and imploded upon itself two to three million years ago, resulting in the formation of the crater, which then fostered a distinctive ecosystem with diverse plant life.
Currently, the crater boasts the highest density of wildlife in Africa. Zebras, buffalo, warthogs, baboons, elephants, flamingos, ostriches, and hippos inhabit it. There is also a significant population of predators, including lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs, and leopards. A major draw of the Ngorongoro Crater is undoubtedly the Big Five – buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion, and rhino. All of them can be observed within this 20-kilometer (12.5-mile) wide and 600-meter (2,000-foot) deep crater. Take in the array of animals and the stunning colors of the landscapes. The vistas from the crater rim overlooking the crater floor are breathtaking. Due to its natural splendor, the crater is recognized as one of Africa’s Seven Natural Wonders.
