Overview

One of the most sought-after safari activities for tourists in Uganda is trekking with gorillas. The country is home to over 50% of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, estimated to number around 1,000 in 2024.

Those embarking on gorilla trekking excursions have a 95% chance of encountering these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. In addition to gorilla trekking, tracking chimpanzees is another highly popular tourist attraction, with Kibale National Park being home to the largest population of primates in Africa, which includes approximately 1,500 chimpanzees.

Uganda’s diverse ecosystems support a wide variety of wildlife, making it an ideal destination for African safaris. Queen Elizabeth National Park, which spans 764 square miles, is home to more than 95 different mammal species and over 600 bird species.

On safari excursions in this park, visitors may have the chance to observe animals such as leopards, elephants, lions, as well as buffalo and various antelope species. Murchison Falls National Park, the largest protected area in Uganda covering 14,833 square miles, boasts stunning views of the Nile River and its famous waterfall, which drops 141 feet. Safari trips in this park offer opportunities to see hippos, crocodiles, giraffes, and a diverse range of bird species.
